There are many things we all HATE doing. If you are like me and are like most typical sales people then paperwork, administration and writing reports are up there in your top 10 list of pet hates. Here is a method I use which helps me to do those things.
I was born and grew up in Northern Ireland and I remember people would proudly tell any one who would listen that we had the highest rate of heart disease in the world! I think this had something to do with generations of fried food, Guinness and sitting in pubs all day smoking untipped cigarettes! Like many of my peers I was smoking 10 a day from the age of 10 and 20 by my 20th birthday.
I haven’t had a cigarette now for over 15 years but even though I haven’t smoked, I am still a smoker. The secret of my success?
I gave up by not giving up. I just extended the ‘gaps’ between cigarettes. I used the 10-minute rule. Every time I had the urge to smoke I would say to myself that I could have one in 10 minutes. But it had to be EXACTLY 10 minutes. If I missed it (which I did most of the time) I would have to wait another 10 minutes. Before long it was an hour and increasing between each ACTUAL cigarette. Now I use this rule and you can too, to get a handle on paperwork or any habit you want to create or destroy.
The next time something important needs doing and you have the sense you are procrastinating, just tell yourself that you can stop after 10 minutes. You will be surprised at how this little rule can bring big results in many areas of your life.
